DTF, Embroidery, or Screen Printing — Which One's Right for You?

Posted by Sport X Canada

When you're ordering custom apparel for your team, school, or business, one of the first questions we'll ask is: how do you want it decorated?

For a lot of people, that's where things get a little fuzzy. DTF? Embroidery? Screen printing? What's the difference, and does it even matter?

It does — and we're here to make it simple.

DTF (Direct to Film)

DTF is our fully in-house decoration method, and it's become one of our most popular options for good reason.

A design is printed onto a special film and then heat-transferred directly onto the garment. The result is a vibrant, full-colour print that holds up well through regular washing and wear.

DTF works great for:

  • Complex logos with multiple colours or fine detail
  • Small to large order quantities (no minimum — great for one-offs)
  • Full-colour photographic or gradient designs
  • A wide range of fabrics and garment types

Things to keep in mind:

  • Has a slightly different feel than a traditional screen print — more of a smooth, flexible finish

If you're not sure where to start, DTF is usually a safe first choice. It's versatile, cost-effective at most quantities, and the turnaround is fast since we handle it right here in Abbotsford.

Embroidery

Embroidery is the classic choice for a reason — there's a quality and permanence to it that's hard to beat.

Your logo or design is stitched directly into the fabric using thread, creating a textured, dimensional look that feels premium and professional.

Embroidery works great for:

  • Polo shirts, dress shirts, and workwear
  • Hats, toques, and headwear
  • Logos that are bold and relatively simple in shape
  • Anything where a professional, lasting impression matters

Things to keep in mind:

  • Not ideal for very fine detail or small text
  • Designs with gradients or photographic elements don't translate well to thread
  • Slightly higher per-unit cost than DTF for small quantities, but the look is distinctive

If your team or business wants something that feels established and high-quality — embroidery is worth it.

Screen Printing

Screen printing is the traditional workhorse of the custom apparel world, and for large orders with consistent colours, it's hard to beat on cost.

Ink is pushed through a stencilled screen directly onto the garment, one colour at a time. The result is a soft, clean print that's extremely durable.

Screen printing works great for:

  • Large quantity orders (typically 24+ pieces)
  • Designs with a limited number of solid colours
  • T-shirts, hoodies, and casual team wear
  • Situations where consistent colour across a large run is important

Things to keep in mind:

  • Setup costs (screens) make small runs less economical
  • Not suited for photographic images or complex gradients
  • Each colour in the design adds to the cost

If you're outfitting a full team or school with a simple, bold logo and ordering in volume — screen printing is often the most cost-effective path.
