Why We Donate Instead of Discount

People ask me this more than you'd think.

They'll hear about our Give-Back Program — that we donate 25 to 40% of every order back to the school, PAC, or charity that placed it — and their first question is usually some version of: why don't you just give them a discount instead?

It's a fair question. And I think the answer says a lot about why we built Sport X Canada the way we did.

A Discount Helps Once. A Donation Keeps Giving.

When you discount an order, you're reducing what the customer pays. That's it. The money stays with the buyer, the transaction closes, and that's the end of the story.

A donation works differently.

When a school or PAC receives a donation from their Sport X order, that money goes back into the organization — into the fund, the PAC account, the team budget. It can be used for the next round of apparel. It compounds over time.

We've seen PACs use their donations to cover costs they couldn't have budgeted for otherwise. We've seen sports teams reinvest their donations into the next season's gear. That's a different kind of value than shaving a few dollars off an invoice.

It Keeps the Relationship Honest

Here's something I've always believed: the moment you start competing on price, you're in a race to the bottom.

Discounts create an expectation. Next order, the customer wonders if they can get a better deal. They shop around. The relationship becomes transactional.

Donations reframe the whole thing. We're not trying to be the cheapest option — we're trying to be the most valuable partner for schools and community organizations. That's a different conversation, and honestly, it's a more interesting one.

It Reflects What We Actually Care About

I started Sport X Canada because I wanted to build something that did more than just sell shirts.

The Fraser Valley has incredible schools, sports programs, and community organizations — and a lot of them are working with tight budgets. If we can help a PAC raise money, help a team fund their season, or help a charity stretch their dollars further just by doing what we already do — that feels like the right way to run a business.

The donation model isn't a marketing strategy. It's just how we think business should work.
